Artem has recently played a part in crafting a hot air balloon specialist rig for the Regency romance Netflix hit, Bridgerton. Starring Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton, the show's signature lavish and visually captivating aesthetic transports viewers back to the opulent world of early 19th-century London.

Project Breakdown

In the scorching summer heat of summer 2022, our resilient technicians took on the task of creating a ride on hot air balloon and rig.

The process of creating the hot air balloon basket began with cutting out a polyform using the 7-axis Kuka robot. This advanced robotic system carves the basket from a lightweight polymer material, ensuring intricate detail and accuracy.

The polyform basket was then covered with a layer of foil to create a smooth surface. Over this foiled form, fibreglass was applied. A metal framework was then welded to provide internal support, which is then securely bonded to the inside of the fibreglass form.

The surface of the basket was meticulously filled, sanded, and primed to create a uniform base, and the basket is then painted and decorated to achieve the desired finish.

In parallel, a wooden ring was constructed to enhance the basket's design. This ring was welded and clad with bendy MDF to form a hexagonal structure. The MDF then artworked to create a wood effect.

The lifting rig was then welded and built to match the diameter of the VFX balloon to be added in post-production.
