World Productions thriller, Bodyguard, is a fast paced suspense filled drama for BBC One.
Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the fictional story of David Budd (played by Richard Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a protection officer for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch (RaSP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service.
Artem provided the set piece pyrotechnics, standby SFX and special props for the six-part series.
Artem supplied realistic prop explosives and created a realistic, radio-controlled Bomb Disposal Unit for the fast paced shoot.
We also provided realistic and credible effects for the superb action shots, which included a variety of bullet hits - including large-calibre sniper fire hits as seen in Episode 2.
For Episode 3, we designed and executed an award-winning interior explosion in a prestigious London location.
Toby Stewart, Artem SFX Supervisor for the production, said: 'It is always an interesting challenge to make things look real while doing zero actual damage. This particular explosion was with an audience and two people on stage standing only a few feet away from the blast centre. The director Thomas Vincent obviously wanted it to look authentic.'
Mike Kelt, Artem CEO, underlined the philosophy behind the project: 'It can be easy to make pyrotechnics look good, and often you will see fireballs, but these are usually unrealistic as high explosives might give an instantaneous flash, but rarely flame. It is the shockwave that does the damage and recreating that is the challenge.'
Bodyguard was a six-part series executive produced by showrunner Jed Mercurio and Simon Heath for World Productions and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for BBC One. The assassination of politician Julia Montague in an explosion designed and carried out by Artem won the BAFTA TV 'Must See Moment' award in 2019.
