Call the Midwife BBC Drama

Artem has provided a range of effects for the current series of Call the Midwife, the popular BBC drama following the lives of a group of midwives working in the poverty-stricken East End of London during the 1950s.

The new series of Call the Midwife kicked off with the Christmas special, for which we created an exploding Christmas pudding! This involved concocting a special ‘Christmas pudding’ mix, which we then blasted against the wall. For the rest of the series, we provided various weather effects, including a violent storm; for this, we provided plenty of wind and rain, as well as breakable slates to fall from a rooftop. Other minor effects included fires in grates, and providing heated water and steam for bathroom scenes.

Mike Kelt, Artem’s CEO and SFX Supervisor on the project said: ‘It was a joy to work with such an organised, friendly production team on Call the Midwife. With projects like this, the purpose of our effects is to bring scenes to life and the challenge is to do so in a way that is undetectable.’
