Artem Case Studies
Knitted Biplane University Hertforshire, RAF museum
Artem worked with The University of Hertfordshire to create a replica biplane for the RAF Museum’s latest exhibition curated by Britain from Above, a lottery funded initiative in association with English Heritage.
The replica de Havilland 9b biplane was first drawn up in 3D using computer aided design (CAD) before being cut out of polystyrene on our in-house KUKA robot arm. The polystyrene pieces were then smoothed and assembled before giving the plane a coat of bright blue emulsion paint and latex.
The plane is a replica of a biplane used in a pioneering air survey, set up by First World War veterans, which photographed Britain’s landscapes. The model, with an overall wingspan of 4m, is the exhibition’s focal point at the RAF Museum, Hendon, London.
