Artem Case Studies
Golf GTI Gene Kelly Volkswagen
'We were really happy with the work Artem did for us, the team were excellent.'
Blake Powell, Producer, Stink
Artem were approached by Stink to help realise an ambitious idea from directing duo NE-Os (aka Jake Knight and Ryoko Tanaka) for VW Golf. The spot recreates Gene Kelly's classic dance scene from Singing in the Rain, but with a modern twist - this time he's breakdancing!
Artem's creative team were asked to transform an actor and three of the best breakdancers in the world into Gene Kelly using prosthetic special effects make up. A life cast was taken of the principal actor to leave us with an exact copy of his face to sculpt into Gene Kelly. Once approved, we then cast out the prosthetic pieces in foam latex and painted them. Application took several hours and the look was completed with a set of teeth and a professional wig. The dancers' latex masks were more generic pull-on prosthetics as the dancers were from the USA and not available for life casting.
In the end, MPC managed to successfully track real footage of Gene Kelly onto the actor for the close-up head shots, but Artem' prosthetics appear in all the non-profile and background shots. The end result is a fantastic commercial you can see here.
