C4 Literacy Forest 4 Creative
Everyone is thrilled with the Literacy spot and thinks the set looks wonderful!
Olivia Chalk, Producer, Channel 4
Channel 4 approached Artem to help them design and build this Pan's Labyrinth and Tim Burton inspired alphabet forest.
After a lot of drawing and consultation the creative team settled on some definitive designs. Our team of special effects artists sculpted 16 different tree letters ranging in size from 11 to 20 feet from polystyrene and meticulously painted them to attain the desired look. Simultaneously, we fashioned 520 alphabet shaped twigs to line the pathway through the forest explored by the boy.
After the initial shoot, we turned the W tree stump into a chair from which celebrities could read extracts from famous childrens stories. These interstitials were transmitted around themed programming for a week and included readings by Jimmy Carr, Davina McCall, Jon Snow and David Starkey.
To further illustrate the joy of reading, Artem also made a giant peach (James & The Giant Peach), a snozcumber (The BFG), a large honey pot (Winney The Pooh) and a broomstick (Harry Potter). There were only 9 days from confirmation to installation in M Stage at Pinewood so the timetable was exceedingly tight. The end result was worth the effort as it looked truly magical and helped a great cause.
