Earlier this year, we were asked by education charity Into Film to give a talk to a selection of schools on the magic of SFX, and how to pursue a career in film. The Grosvenor Picture Theatre in Glasgow played host to the captivating talk, given by Artem CEO Mike Kelt. The session included hands-on demonstrations and a Q&A.
With the UK’s unpredictable weather, having a reliable way to create winter scenes is invaluable for filmmakers. Mike demonstrated to the audience the power of the Antari snow machine, covering the students with fluffy falling snow.
Another exciting demonstration focused on breakaway glass. This special type of glass is designed to shatter safely, making it perfect for action scenes. Mike explained the science behind it, showcasing how it mimics the look and feel of real glass while ensuring safety on set. Students volunteered to smash a sheet of glass over each other’s heads! Discovering the techniques used to ensure realistic yet safe stunts.
Lastly was the blood rig. This intricate piece of equipment is used to simulate realistic gunshot effects, creating the illusion of a bullet impact with a burst of blood. One brave student volunteered to help showcase how the rig works, with Mike explaining the mechanics behind it, including the use of squibs and pressurized blood packets.
Events like these are crucial in nurturing the next generation of SFX artists and filmmakers, we hope were able to inspire a few young minds and encourage them to pursue their passion!
