Artem Case Studies

Book of Blood Midnight Picture Show

Book of Blood is a British mystery-drama-horror film directed by John Harrison, starring Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward, and Doug Bradley, shot in Edinburgh and London. The script is based on Clive Barker's Book of Blood stories and follows a young man who is beset by demons that use his skin as their blank canvas on which to write details of their horrific deaths.

Artem created all the prosthetics for the film, from tiny scars and words etched into the actor's body to a full skinned suit covered in bloody writing.  Other SFX provided for the film included rain FX, practical fire FX and causing a car tyre to blow out safely as part of a car accident sequence.

Bespoke FX included: large scale blood-letting FX; building a 360 degree camera rig; pyrotechnics to create spontaneously combusting written messages; "bleeding" walls and faces "peeling off". The climax of the film featured an "army of the dead", which kept our prosthetics and special make-up team very busy making dozens of uniquely gruesome full-head silicone and latex face masks, gashes, wounds and broken and distorted limbs.
